What is a TAG Student?

The Oregon state definition of "talented & gifted is: Talented and gifted children means those children who require special educational programs or services, or both, beyond those normally provided by the regular school program in order to realize their contribution to self and society and who demonstrate outstanding ability or potential in one or more of the following areas:
(a) General intellectual ability as commonly measured by measures of intelligence and aptitude.
(b) Unusual academic ability in one or more academic areas.
(c) Creative ability in using original or nontraditional methods of thinking and producing.
(d) Leadership ability in motivating the performance of others either in educational or noneducational settings.
(e) Ability in the visual or performing arts, such as dance, music or art.
(Oregon Rev. Stat. 343.395)

Students identified as “TAG” receive instruction at their rate and level.  Instruction may  include enrichment, acceleration, independent study, curriculum compacting, etc. Students may also receive services such as pull-out programs, field trips, and other services as available and appropriate.

How TAG Students are Identified & Taught

  • Testing Information
    • Schedule - Students are tested in the fall
    • Types of tests administered - State standardized tests (such as the OAKS), IQ tests, Achievement tests, or through intellectual tests such as the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).  A score or 97% could be an indicator that the child may be Talented and Gifted.
    • Early Entry- Oregon State Law States children must be 5 years old by September 1 to enter Kindergarten, or 6 years old by September 1 to enter First Grade.  A student entering school having completed a year in an appropriately accredited school, may not have to comply with the State age requirement to enter First Grade.
    • English Language Learners (ELL) - non-English speaking students are tested using multiple criteria (coming soon)
