What is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

An acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment, or both, that adversely affects a child's educational performance.  The term includes open or closed head injuries resulting in impairments in one or more areas, including:

  1. Cognition
  2. Language
  3. Memory, attention, reasoning, abstract thinking, judgment, problem-solving
  4. Sensory, perceptual, and motor abilities
  5. Psychosocial behavior, physical functions, information processing; and speech.

The term does not include brain injuries that are congenital or degenerative, or brain injuries induced by birth trauma.

Contact the School Psychologist at your local school if you have information about a student who has had a Traumatic Brain Injury (including concussions).

The School Psychologist/TBI Coach will help facilitate services available in the Redmond School District. The district has videos, pamphlets and training resources depending on the needs of the student, staff and family.
