 Welcome to Student Services! 

 

The goal of Student Services is to provide quality support, services and instruction to all students in order to prepare them for their future. We feel that it is important to have a working knowledge of the programs that we serve and how we can improve services for all students and our community.

  

The department provides programs to the student population for the Redmond School District, including Students with Disabilities, English Language Learners (ELL), School Nurses, Counselors, Section 504, and Positive Behaviorial Interventions and Supports (PBIS).  Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

 

Meet your Student Services Team: 

   Martha

Martha Hinman, Executive Director of Student Services 

Martha Hinman is the Executive Director of Student Services for the Redmond School District.  In this role, Martha is responsible for coordination and supervision of; Special Education, English Language Learners, 504, School Nurses, School Resource Officers, Talented and Gifted, Homeless, and School Counselors.
Martha is a qualified in Special Education and School Administration and holds a Masters of Art in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College and an Initial Administration License from the University of Oregon. 
 
Martha is no stranger to Special Education and diversified learners having spent 17 years as a Special Education Teacher and four years as an administrator, which taught her the importance of  team work, collaboration and student advocacy.
 
Before joining the Redmond School District in 2004, Martha worked for the Bend-LaPine School District for 11 years as a teacher and then as a Teacher on Special Assignment, working in Special Education monitoring and compliance.

 

Martha supports a wide range of programs and services - from to training, mentoring, and teacher evaluation to Special Education compliance, policy and practice assurances, and coordination of the Student Services programs.
 
Drawing on over 20 years experience in education including the private and public setting, Martha now focuses on public education. For the past 5 years Martha has been an adjunct professor for Lewis and Clark College and George Fox University.  Teaching both special education and general education curriculum and instruction courses.
 
Martha is passionate about inclusionary practices that serve all students.  Implementation of differentiation, proficiency based grading, and empowering students through self advocacy.
 

Martha moved to Bend in 1993 from her home state of Maine.  She has 3 children who are successfully pursuing their adult lives in Idaho, California, and Central America.  Her husband teaches in the Bend-LaPine School District at the middle school behavior program.  She enjoys river rafting, skiing, hiking, reading, cooking, and gardening.

Kerry
Kerry Desmarais, Director of Student Services

 
Prior to becoming the Director of Student Services in July 2011, Kerry was the Assistant Director of Student Services as well as the Student Services Coordinator.  She has been with the Redmond School District since 2007.  Kerry holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Oregon and a Master of Science in Education from Portland State University.  She has her Continuing Teaching License in General and Special Education as well as her Initial Administrative License.
Kerry is no stranger to the multi-faceted arena of Special Education, having spent sevent years as a Special Education teacher and one year as a Language Development Specialist, which taught her the importance of organization and flexibility. 
In her current role, Kerry is reponsible for coordinating Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) efforts district-wide, Systems Performance Review and Improvement (SPR&I) compliance, managing Section 504 district-wide, supporting Special Education teachers, facilitating Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) transitions, Extended School Year (ESY) services, Extended Measures assessments, and is a trainer of Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP).
Kerry enjoys spending time with her family; her husband, son, and daughter.  They are often found camping around Central Oregon, traveling throughout the world, or relaxing on the Deschutes River during the summer.

Karen

Karen Andrade, ELL Coordinator
 
Karen Andrade is Redmond School District's English Language Learner Program Coordinator.  In this role, Karen is responsible for coordinating and managing the program and leads a team of 14 staff that provides instruction for all aspects of English Language Development, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
 
Karen is a qualified teacher holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spansih and Sociology from California State University at Sacramento, an ESOL endorsement from Lewis and Clark University, and a Reading endorsement.
 
With more than 41 years of experience in education, Karen started her full time position as an ELL Coordinator for Redmond School District after spending 24 years teaching in K-8 classrooms and 12 years as a Reading and ESOL Specialist.
 
The English Language Program offers a wide range of services from English Language Development to interpreting and translating, adult basic education and ESOL classes for non-Enlish speaking parents, and professional development opportunities for teachers in effective practices that support all students, including LEP's, Migrant and SPED in reaching benchmarks.

Karen M

Karen McBride, Administrative Assistant - ELL

Karen McBride is the ELL Administrative Assistant for the Redmond School District. Karen’s job is tracking the ELL students served within the district. It also includes working with the District’s Community Liaisons to coordinate interpreter/translation needs for students, parents and staff.  She has been in this position for 3 ˝ years.  Prior to this she worked at Lynch as an aide for nine years.
