Week Three

September 22, 2008

Dear First Grade Family,

We have been learning some factual information about owls as well as reading The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.  Students painted owls with their water colors and will soon write acrostic poems using the word owls.

Open House  Please visit our classroom on Tuesday evening, September 23rd, from 6-7 pm.  There will also be a Scholastic Book Fair in the school library from 3:30 pm until 7:30 pm on Tuesday.

Please sign up for your October conference during Open House.  The schedules will be posted on the wall across from the office.

Volunteers   Classroom volunteers are GREATLY APPRECIATED!  Open House is a great time to sign up for a time to help in our classroom.  If you are planning to volunteer at school this year, please stop by the office to fill out the necessary paper work.  The paper work must be resubmitted each year.

Fall Pictures  Student pictures will be taken on Tuesday, October 7th.  More information will come home soon.

Week Two

September 15, 2008

Dear First Grade Family,

Students enjoyed sharing their “All About Me Bags” last week.  Thank you for your help in putting these together.

On Thursday, we began a novel-based storyline on The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.  We will be learning about owls and other nocturnal animals as we read this book together.

Homework   Homework Folders will be sent home each Monday and should be returned with the completed work by the following Monday.

Please complete and return the Everyday Mathematics worksheets.

Practice reading, writing, and spelling the “at” family words. There will be a spelling test on five of these words on Friday.

Students should complete and return the writing worksheet.  Please practice reading and writing the “high frequency” words.  Memorizing words that occur most frequently in reading is important to gaining early fluency.  We will be continually reviewing these words in class and they will be on spelling tests later in the year.

First graders should be spending at least 15 to 20 minutes, each day, reading or being read to.

Sincerely,

Gloria Condon

Open House  John Tuck School will be celebrating a “Back to School Night” open house next Tuesday, September 23rd from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  Please mark it on your calendar!

Week One

September 8, 2008

Dear First Grade Family,

Thank you so much a 100% turnout for the assessment appointments.  It is extremely valuable for me to spend some one-on-one time with each student at the beginning of the school year.

We are becoming acquainted and have been learning classroom routines and procedures.  Just lining up in alphabetical order for lunch and getting everyone on the correct bus are major tasks at this stage.

Students will begin sharing their All About Me Bags today.  A few will share each day throughout the week.  This is a fun and effective way to become acquainted.

Homework The folders listed on the supply list will be used for homework and communication.  Students should carry these back and forth to school in a backpack or book-bag.  School papers and correspondence will come home via this folder.  You may wish to use it to send notes, permission slips, book orders, etc. back to school.  Homework will go home on Monday and should be returned by the following Monday.

Please read the Family Letter introducing you to First Grade Everyday Mathematics.  The letter for each unit should be saved for reference during that unit.

Students should complete the writing worksheet.  Please pay special attention to the four sight words, as there will be a test on these words on Friday.  We will be working with the sight words in class throughout the week.

First graders should be spending at least 15 to 20 minutes, each day, reading or being read to.

Book Orders  If you would like to order Scholastic Books this month, please do so by this Friday, September 12th.

Have a great week!
